‘Meet the Fockers’ is a successful sequel
Like “Meet the Parents,” the follow-up comedy “Meet the Fockers” hinges on the well-traveled idea that there’s something comic about being forced to be family.
Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro are once again a hilarious duo. Their onscreen chemistry– Stiller as the stumbling, bumbling, trying-too-hard-to-impress son-in-law to De Niro’s ex CIA tough-guy father– is electrifying. Dustin Hoffman is a tremendous addition to the cast as Greg’s Jewish father and Barbara Streisand’s sex therapist performance was suitable as Stiller’s mother, finally answering the long asked question,”Who would name their kid Gaylord Focker?”
Anyone writing a comedy sequel should use “Meet the Fockers” as a blueprint: it followed the success formula of “Meet the Parents” without being formulated, the director Jay Roach and the cast were phenomenal.
The bottom line is, if you enjoyed the first movie, “Meet the Fockers” will have you rolling in the aisles. Four years was a long time to wait, but it was worth it.
Be sure to stick around after the movie ends. Just as in “Meet the Parents,” you might miss some extra gut-busters in the credits.
The comedy is still showing in select theaters and will be released on DVD/VHS soon.
