Lady ‘Cats dual with Owls, come away with split
One strike.
That’s how close the Lady Bobcats softball came to nailing down a doubleheader sweep of #3-ranked Kennesaw State University at the Peeler Complex on Tuesday. After winning the first game 6-2 and leading 4-3 in the second game, the Lady Bobcats were on the verge of an impressive feat. Instead, with a two-strike count, two outs, and two Lady Owls on base, Megan Gant delivered a clutch two-run double to the alley in left-center field to give Kennesaw State the come-from-behind win in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
In the first game, Georgia College & State University got on the board early as Jenna Kubesch delivered a two-run single to center field to break a scoreless tie. Diana Baruffa and Aundrea Baker scored on the play to give the Lady Bobcats a 2-0 lead. The score remained that way until the top of the sixth, when KSU’s Keri McKee got the better of a Kubesch fastball and drilled it over the right field fence for a two-run homer, tying the score at 2-2.
In the bottom of the inning, clutch hitting paired with a few KSU defensive miscues helped the Lady Bobcats tack a four-spot on the scoreboard. Aundrea Baker singled home a run, and during the play the Lady Owls committed a costly throwing error that cost KSU two additional runs. Heather Jones followed with an RBI double to put GC&SU up for good, 6-2.
Jenna Kubesch continued her remarkable season for the Lady Bobcats, yielding just two runs on five hits while tossing a complete game and racking up six strikeouts in the process. Janet Kearns (11-2) suffered just her second loss of the season for the Lady Owls, giving up two earned runs and six hits in 3.2 innings.
In the nightcap, the Lady Bobcats rallied from a one-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth as Diana Baruffa slammed a clutch two-run homerun, putting GC&SU ahead 4-3 with just a half-inning to play. However, just one out away from their second loss of the day, KSU rallied to score two runs via a Megan Gant homerun in the top of the seventh.
The Lady Bobcats failed to push another run home in the bottom half of the inning, and the Lady Owls hung on to take the second game, 5-4. Lisa Lamb tallied her second save of the season for the Owls, while Brittany Matthews (17-2) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings. Jenna Kubesch (12-5) went the distance from the pitching circle once again for the Lady Bobcats, but took the loss, allowing four earned runs and eight hits .
The Lady Bobcats will next be away on April 2 against Armstrong State.
