Tennis teams gain speed for PBC tourney

The Georgia College & State University tennis teams are up to their old tricks with identical 9-0 victories over Wingate University Monday in matches held at Augusta State University. The GC&SU men also stomped Concord College 9-0 on Monday as the Bobcats somehow squeezed two matches in one day.
In women’s play, seventh-ranked GC&SU (7-2) opened the day by sweeping the three doubles matches. GC&SU’s Anna Shchupak and Celine Martin knocked off Wingate’s Alexis McDaniel and Sydney Palleson 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Chenelle Kruger and Anna Davidsson defeated Courtney Luce and Erika Gluckstal 8-2 at No. 2. Sofia Intriago and Jessica McKnight completed the doubles sweep for the Bobcats at No. 3 with an 8-2 victory over Kim Wenstrand and Cameron Curlee.
The Lady Bobcats won all six singles matches in straight sets as Shchupak defeated McDaniel 6-0;6-0 at No. 1, and Martin defeated Luce 6-0;6-2 at No. 2. Kruger won 6-0;6-0 over Palleson at No. 3, while Davidsson defeated Gluckstal 6-4;6-0 at No. 4. Intrigao defeated Curlee 6-1;6-2 at No. 5, and McKnight wrapped up the sweep with a 6-2;6-4 victory over Wenstrand at No. 6 singles.
In men’s play, 16th ranked GC&SU (13-2) opened the day with a 9-0 win over Wingate, beginning with three straight doubles wins. Neil Scantlebury and Rodrigo Yamauti paired up for an 8-3 win over Jacobo Uribe and Joe Kanekar at No. 1, while Erick Siquiera and Brandon Lee blanked Chase Carman and Kotaro Noguchi 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Marcelo Ferreira and Roberto Oliveira completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 over Mark Stern and Brandon Thornton.
Scantlebury held on for a 7-5;3-6;6-1 victory over Uribe at No. 1singles, while the Bobcats won all five of the other singles matches in straight sets to wrap up the 9- 0 victory.
Later in the day, the Bobcats defeated Concord College 9-0. Scantlebury and Yamauti defeated Mark O,Neil and Chris Nichols 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Siquiera paired up with Tony Bertucci for an 8-0 win at No. 2 over Matt Rupe and Corin Thorn. Ferreira and Jack Owens finished the Bobcat,s doubles sweep at No. 3 with an 8-0 win over Ryan Hunt and Craig Maxey.
The Bobcats also dominated the singles matches, winning all six in straight sets. Scantlebury defeated O,Neil 6-3;6-3 at No. 1, while Lee, Mariano Cebrian, and Oliveira won their matches 6-0;6-0 in the two, three and four spots, respectively. Bertucci knocked off Thorn 6-0;6-1 at No. 5, and Owens defeated Nichols 6-0;6-2 at No.6 singles.
GC&SU returns home Friday, March 25 for a Peach Belt Conference match with North Florida beginning at 2 p.m. at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
