Student: parking problems have only gotten worse over the years
Editor:
I have been coming to GC&SU since fall 2001 and have not seen any improvements to the parking arrangements for students. The only thing I have seen is the situation getting worse and worse every year. The construction of the new dorms adds more students to this university, hence the gradual decrease in parking spots.
I know there have been talks about constructing a parking deck, and clearing some land to make more parking lots, but up to this point it just has been talks and no action. I am sure there are legal restrictions with constructing a parking deck or perhaps trying to clear land where land simply is not allowed to be cleared, so therefore I have a suggestion to make to all the freshman students who live in both the old and new dorms.
It is ok to walk to class! It is good for you to walk, and you will have a chance to meet new people on the way to your classes. So, I want to ask myself this question. Why do I still see so many students pull out of their dorm parking lots and drive to school? And I answer. People don’t like to move around much these days.
I believe the policies that they have in bigger universities such as UGA or the University of South Carolina about parking make a lot of sense. Those universities restrict freshman students from owning cars period if they are living on-campus. I think that makes a lot of sense, and I believe GC&SU should begin to swing towards similar policies if they are ever going to improve the dreaded parking problems that have been haunting the professors and students here for years.
