Nonprofit Awareness Week comes to GC&SU
Special to The Colonnade
The American Humanics Student Association (AHSA) at Georgia College & State University will host its very first Nonprofit Awareness Week to increase the level of appreciation, knowledge of the sector and how to get involved.
The week will showcase every aspect of the nonprofit field through special events planned by the members of AHSA. During the entire week, the campus will be saturated with facts about the nonprofit sector through creative means that inform the public about job opportunities, cost of volunteer hours and how much money nonprofits has saved the U.S. government.
“We hope to create a large amount of buzz around campus about nonprofits and our student organizations,” said Josh Kitchens, student coordinator for Awareness Week. “Even though we are a small organization and are only in our second year of operation, we’ve got a lot of heart and we think that this week will display our purpose and reasons to want to work in the nonprofit sector.”
Also during the week, one of the most important aspects of nonprofit work, fundraising, will be showcased through a raffle that will raise money for an educational assistance award to be presented to an AHSA student in the fall.
Another event that will showcase fundraising will be the “jumble sale.” On Wednesday, March 9, new and used items will be sold on front campus to raise money to fund several projects within the student association.
The main event of the week will be on Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in Arts & Sciences 275 when former director of “I Hope” Service Center, David Berhardt, will discuss his experiences with working in the nonprofit field. Preceding Berhardt’s speech, AHSA students will lead an information session that will focus on the benefits of pursuing a career in nonprofits, as well as the advantages the AH program has to offer. The winner of the proceeds of the raffle will also be drawn at this event.
American Humanics is a national alliance of colleges, universities and nonprofit organizations preparing undergraduates for careers and leadership positions within all areas of the nonprofit field.
