Love

I am always amazed to see the large number of loving couples on campus. There is a sense of care and sincerity, romance and joy in young love. With such a commitment among these lovers there is a need for constant togetherness.

However, there is also a desperate need to conform and become something or someone that you are not. So, what do you do when being part of a couple makes one lose a sense of self?

There is something special about being unique and true to your own ideas. However I have seen people who completely change because of the person that they are seeing at the time. Sure, they have added something positive to their lives, but there is never a need to be someone you are not because of your mate.

I see this often in women. As much as I hate to admit that, it is true. We have this need to please and in our pleasing, we change. Sometimes it’s little things like our music choices or hairstyles. But when your view on life, or school or you become isolated from family and friends, that is where the problem begins.

I am reminded of Polonius in Hamlet who says ‘to thine own self be true.” At the end of the day, your partner is not who you are. You are an individual, plain and simple. A need to be someone we are not is from a need to see that we are flawed and fear that our flaws are not attractive. But that is the beauty of being with someone that is truly right for you. They will love and understand your flaws. They will admire you for your good and bad sides and not hold judgements against you.

The things that make you unique and special are why someone should and will love you. Never think that you are never good enough, because you are. And if you or someone you know feels this way remember, to love someone is easy, but to love completely and truly is what a relationship is all about.
