Women win; men lose against CSU

Georgia College & State University split a Peach Belt Conference basketball doubleheader with Columbus State Feb. 23 in the Centennial Center. The GC&SU Lady Bobcats won 78-70 over the Lady Cougars, while Columbus State won the men’s game in overtime 83-74.

In the women’s game, red-shirt freshman Shanice Dawson came off the bench with a career high 15 points to lead GC&SU (18-8, 9-6 PBC) in the 78-70 victory. Columbus State (18-8, 11-4 PBC) used an early 11-0 run to build an eight point cushion, but GC&SU battled back with a 13-0 run late in the period to build a seven point lead and would take a 42-35 advantage into the locker room at the intermission.

The Lady Bobcats exploded with a 13-0 run early in the second half capped by a jumper from Alicia Porter to build its largest lead at 55-37. The Lady Cougars answered with an 11-0 run of their own to get back into the game. GC&SU would never surrender the lead and held on for the eight point victory.

In addition to Dawson,s 15 points, Porter added 14 points, while Kirsti Jones had 11 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. GC&SU out-rebounded CSU 50-44 and committed only 12 turnovers. The Lady Bobcats also shot 42.4% from the floor and 44.4% from three point range, while holding the Lady Cougars to just 9.5% from behind the arc.

In the men’s game, GC&SU’s (13-13, 5-10 PBC) Jeremy Mayweather hit a three pointer at the end of regulation to tie the game at 69-all and force overtime, but Columbus State (18-7, 11-4 PBC) out-scored the Bobcats 14-5 in the extra period to come away with the 83-74 win.

CSU’s Yandel Brown hit a trio of three-pointers to help the Cougars stretch their lead out to double digits early in the half. The Bobcats battled back to get within single digits at the half as the Cougars led 34-26.

GC&SU got within a single point late in the second half, but Columbus State hit three pointers on three straight possessions to try to pull away again with a 64-55 lead.

The Bobcats chipped away again and Cooper Sellers hit a three pointer with eight seconds remaining to cut the CSU lead down to 68-66. Brown was fouled but hit only one out of two free throws to leave the door open for the Bobcats as Mayweather tied the game at the buzzer with a three-ball from the right arc.

Ronnie Dennis scored a career high 24 points, while Mayweather also finished with a career best 23 points to lead GC&SU. CSU committed only six turnovers in the game

GC&SU closes out the regular season on Saturday at Clayton State in Morrow, Ga.
