Cheerleaders ready for Nationals comp.
It’s 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon and hotter than five Hells on the top floor of the Centennial Center. While most students are happily returning home from their last class of the day, the cheerleading squad is working hard on their routine, even in the absence of Coach Jerry Fly, who is out sick.
The squad has faced many obstacles this season, untimely injuries, the loss of six male cheerleaders due to grades and other inconveniences, and moving their practices out of Health Sciences because of renovation and into the Centennial Center.
“We have also had to work around weddings, funerals, and the desire of a few of our members to spend some of their time preparing for non-university teams,” Fly said.
Despite the drop in male cheerleaders, the squad still sports an outstanding collection of females.
There are two classes of cheerleading squads: large coed, (5 or more guys) and small coed (4 or fewer guys). The loss of males has allowed the squad to compete in the small coed bracket, as opposed to the large one of many previous years. That means the GCS&SU cheerleading team is still a contender to win the National Competition.
Nevertheless, the move from large coed to small coed has seemed to play more to their own advantage than anything does else does.
“The team is still an excellent team. Actually, the small coed has been much more fun because it gives girls that are bases a role to play,” Fly said.
If the squad continues to demonstrate the same resilience and devotion they have so far, they should expect to do their school proud at Nationals.
