Bobcats’ offensive prowess whips Rams
The Georgia College & State University Bobcats blasted the Albany State University Golden Rams 18-5 on Feb. 16 at John Kurtz Field.
Leading the charge for the Bobcats was John Caruso who went 3-for-4 with two homeruns and four RBI.
“Everybody around me is a good hitter, so I’m going to see good pitches to hit and it works the same for them,” Caruso said. “They’ve got to pitch to everybody.”
ASU pitched to everybody and paid for it. Justin Mills went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Mike Deveaux went 4-for-5 with three RBI and Nick Trainor was 2-for-6 with two doubles. Chris Burrill was 0-for-4 before hitting a homerun over the rightfield wall in the bottom of the sixth inning.
“It was good to see Burrill, who struggled in his early at bats, come out in his last at bat. He got a pitch to drive and hit it out,” Coach Chris Calciano said.
“We’re looking to build off of winning two out of three from Francis Marion. We came out and swung the bats really well,” Calciano said.
The Bobcats scored 18 runs on 23 hits. It was the second consecutive game that the Bobcats had 20 or more hits.
ASU got up early by scoring two runs in the top of the second inning, but GC&SU answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. It was all GC&SU the rest of the game.
Caruso went deep with his first homerun as part of a four run third inning. The Bobcats pushed another four runs across the plate in the sixth inning with the help of Caruso and Burrill who both hit homeruns.
ASU cut into the lead by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Bobcats offense responded quickly scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Jayson Bennett picked up his first win of the season by throwing five complete innings allowing three runs on four hits.
“When you’re punishing the ball like that and your getting pretty good pitching and defense you’re going to win a lot of games,” Calciano said.
The Bobcats dominated the game, but there was still plenty to build on for the future.
“I feel pretty good about it even though it wasn’t a conference game. I’m disappointed we had a couple of errors,” Caruso said. “We’re going to be playing tighter games and we gave up five runs, which is big in conference games.”
The Bobcats’ two errors on defense were overshadowed by a diving catch by Burrill in leftfield to rob a Golden Rams batter of extra bases in the top of the fifth inning. The catch brought ASU fans to their feet.
There were many fans in the bleachers and more seated on the hill overlooking the field. The fans were mothers and fathers, current students and alumni and local community residents. They all had one thing in common: baseball.
“I’m a huge baseball fan. The field’s real nice. I enjoy being out here,” senior David Jones said. “They’ve got some good hitters on this team.”
