Community, students invited to bowl for kids
Discounted bowling will be offered to GC&SU students at the Baldwin Bowling Center on Roberson Mill Road on Monday, Feb. 21, as part of the Bowl for Kids Sake annual fundraiser for the Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Children in need of stable and caring role models in their lives come to BBBS to be paired with mentors.
Now in its 10th year in Milledgeville, Bowl for Kids Sake gives community members an opportunity to raise money for community kids.
. The event is co-sponsored through BBBS of the Oconee, Inc. and the GIVE Center. The proceeds of the fundraiser go toward matching children with mentors.
“We are responsible for providing activities for all of the kids on the waiting list and we need to raise money to do that,” BBBS Executive Director Karen Oakes said.
The event begins at 5 p.m. on Feb. 21, although the fundraising begins earlier. Community members form teams of four and find sponsors. Each team member is expected to raise at least $50. Each team will get to bowl against other teams for about a two-hour period. There will be food, prizes and music all evening. Prizes will be given to the teams that raise the most money.
“I have been part of Bowl for Kids Sake for three years now,” said GC&SU student and BBBS staff Katie Wheeler. “It has been so much fun and definitely worth the time and money.”
Last year, there were 117 bowlers from the community that participated in the event, along with 200 GC&SU students. The event raised $11,000 for BBBS last year.
The student portion of the event is sponsored by GC&SU’s Campus Activities Board. There is a $5 entry fee for students which includes unlimited bowling, pizza, Bruster’s ice cream, a live DJ, prizes and bowling shoes. T-shirts will be given until they run out.
“Students would be crazy not to take advantage of this opportunity, to have fun with the student body while helping the children in the community,” GC&SU Freshman Katey Elliott said.
There will be a prize given to every 50th student through the door after 10 p.m.
BBBS hopes to raise $20,000 this year in total from all Bowl for Kids Sake fundraising.
“We hope to raise a lot of money and for people to have a good time and want to come back next year,” Stiles said.
