Love
Dear
Readers,
The love letter is a dying breed. I mean the old-fashioned love letter that required thought, metaphors and postage.
We have become so wrapped up in this technological, quick gratification world that we pour our hearts out via text messages and E-mails. I had a friend that was even proposed to over the phone. But there are a few things that our parents did that aren’t too corny or cheesy. The love letter is one of them.
Some of my favorite Valentine’s Day memories was with my best friend Derrick. He used to live in Florida and while he was there, he would send me letters.
Now it was just as easy for him to E-mail or text message me, but there was something about going to the mailbox and awaiting one of his letters that always put a smile on my face. His letters were always thoughtful, simple and sweet. Now, I am sure he never thought about how much I enjoyed his letters, but it always gave me comfort to send letters back to him and imagine him with the same delight that I had.
Over the years, I have read a collection of letters from family members and friends. There is something very personal about putting your emotions on paper and finding them again years later. You can be flooded with memories, sights and sounds. An E-mail is only good for so long. And while you can always print an E-mail out, someone actually took the time to address an envelope, affix a stamp and take it to its final destination.
So I propose for Valentine’s Day, the return of the love letter. Break out the pen and paper and write down what is in your heart; then send it. For some, the letter might not arrive on Valentine’s Day, but I guarantee that when it does, it will bring the recipient laughter and joy.
That letter will become a capsule in time that will travel great distances to ensure a brighter day for that special someone. And while it is not as expensive as a ring, as beautiful as roses or as sweet as chocolate, it is just as thoughtful, heart-felt and romantic as any other conventional gift.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you all, and Happy Valentine’s Day, Derrick!
Love always,
Desiree
