New bookstore opens Monday

As a result of the ice storm that hit the weekend of Feb. 28, the scheduled opening of the new Maxwell Student Union bookstore was postponed by approximately one week.

“We were trying to get it open this week, but we hope it will be open Monday at the latest,” said Bookstore Manager Lynda Grable. “I have had a few deliveries that have fallen behind schedule. My shipments are probably coming from areas that were hit harder than us. That may be part of the reason why my shipments are not coming in right now.”

Despite the possible delay, many students are looking forward to the new bookstore.

“I’m looking forward to the store opening. It will be more convenient,” said freshman Page Pierce.

Senior Kris Zimmermann also said he believes the bookstore will be convenient.

“I think its great…you can get everything while on campus,” said Zimmermann.

Director of Auxiliary Services Kyle Cullars said workers are working feverishly to get the shelves stocked.

The bookstore on Wilkinson Street will remain open for business, selling mostly text books.

Grable said she expects the MSU bookstore to be busier because of its accessible location.

“I’m looking for more traffic there, because it will be located on campus, but during text book time this store [Wilkinson Street] will be the only store that will provide that service,” said Grable.

The new MSU PawPrints bookstore will not carry any text books, but will have more merchandise available than the Wilkinson Street store.

“There will be a lot we will be selling at this store that we haven’t had space to sell at the other store,” said Cullars.

New items include, but are not limited to, an assortment of school spirit wear, refreshments, general reading books and school supplies.

“We’re going to have a variety…We’re going to try to have arts and architectural sections, biographies, business and economics, poetry, an educational section [and] philosophy,” said Grable. “We’re going to branch out a little bit with a self-help section. It’s going to be nice.”

Dell computers will also be on display and students will eventually have the convenience of ordering them online, Cullars said.

“If you buy a computer with a three year service contract, you get an eight percent discount off their retail price, and I believe, with a one year contract you get a five percent discount,” said Cullars.

Freshman Alex Riggs said this would be a good service for students.

“People around here could definitely use a Dell for class work,” Riggs said. “I will check it out when it’s available.”

A new Einstein Bros. Bagel will eventually be accessible through the new bookstore. The bagel shop is scheduled to open in early March.

After Einstein Bros. Bagel opens and everything is running smoothly, Cullars said there will be a formal grand opening for the new facility.

“We’re going to wait for Einstein’s to open and then we’re going to have a big grand opening that will include Einstein’s, the credit union, the bookstore and the card office all at one time, and we’ll have a lot of promotional items at that time,” said Cullars.
