Distinguished author, poet to hold book reading

Author Opal Moore will hold a book reading at Georgia College & State University on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 12:30 in the Arts & Sciences Auditorium.

Moore, head of the English department at Spelman College in Atlanta, and professor of creative writing, fiction writing and African American literature courses, has published many short stories and essays in journals and anthologies. Her works include “Callaloo,” “African American Review,” and “Honey, Hush!: An Anthology of African American Women’s Humor.” Moore has worked on projects with visual artists, musicians and filmmakers, and has recently published a book called “Lot’s Daughters.”

Sponsored by the Creative Writing Program at GC&SU, Moore will be doing a reading from her book, “Lot’s Daughters.”

“The book, ‘Lot’s Daughters,’ is a distillation and compilation of work that had been accumulating over the years,” said Moore. “My life in Chicago and my imaginings of various ‘leavings’ provide the human and geographic landscape for ‘Lot’s Daughters.’”

“I hope students will attend her poetry reading to gain a deeper appreciation for poetry in particular and contemporary literature and culture in general,” said Martin Lammon, head of the GC&SU Creative Writing Program.

James Winchester, a professor at GC&SU, used to work with Opal Moore at Spelman College, and praises Moore’s work.

“Her poems are both beautifully written and hard-hitting,” said Winchester. “I highly recommend her!”

“Lot’s Daughters”will be sold at the reading and Moore will be available to sign copies. Students are encouraged to attend the reading.

“I hope that everyone on campus, but students in particular, will take advantage of this opportunity to hear her read and talk to her after the reading,” said Lammon.
