Public Safety out “in force” for the 2004 holiday season

Editor:

With the rapidly approaching holiday season, I would like to remind everyone that “Click It or Ticket” and “Operation Zero Tolerance” are also rapidly approaching. Law Enforcement Officers will be out in force around the state enforcing the DUI, seat belt and speeding laws.

I would also like to take this opportunity to discuss two little known laws. First, Under O.C.G.A. 40-6-16, every driver is required to either change lanes or slow down to less than the posted speed limit upon approaching an emergency vehicle parked beside the road with its emergency lights activated. The law states that if it is possible to safely pull into a lane of traffic that is not adjacent to the emergency vehicle, the driver should do so. It also spells out only one penalty for failure to follow the law: a fine of $500. This law was enacted after several officers were killed when they were struck by passing motorists.

Secondly, as part of the Teenage Adult Driver Responsibility Act, if you have a class D Driver’s License, the law states you are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. for any reason. The law goes by license class and not the driver’s age. The fines will vary from agency to agency.

Please remember to drive safely over the holiday period and don’t drink and drive.

Sincerely,
Officer Donald K. Williams
