Bobcat Soccer Falls in 2 OT at Tournament
The GC&SU women’s soccer team looked to pull off one of the largest upsets in Peach Belt Conference Tournament history, but the #8 seeded Bobcats came up short in a 1-0 double-overtime loss at top-seeded Francis Marion University in Wednesday’s first round match.
The Patriots will host the “Final Four” of the tournament on Saturday and Sunday, while GC&SU ends its inaugural season with a 5-10-2 overall record and finished eighth out of nine teams in the Peach Belt Conference during the regular season with a 1-5-2 league mark.
FMU’s (13-3) Katie Riley scored the game-winning goal on a header following a serve from Nicki Fell in the 107th minute during the second overtime period to end the game. A defensive battle, GC&SU nearly claimed a 1-0 lead during regulation, but a 25-yard blast from Emily Seder bounced off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Francis Marion was credited with 10 shots, while the Bobcats were only credited with three. The Patriots held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. GC&SU’s Michelle Parr picked up six saves on the afternoon, while Megan Corker collected her second shutout between the posts for the Patriots.
Highlights of the first season for the Bobcats include the program’s first victory in its season opener with a 2-0 win at Converse College. Freshman Britni Emerson scored the first goal in school history in the 60th minute against Converse with the first assist going to Tracy Peterson on the play. Michelle Parr was the goalkeeper registering the first shutout.
The Bobcats suffered their first loss in its next match, a 4-0 decision at (then) #8 ranked Tusculum College.
