Bobcat construction causes power outages

Recurring power outages at Bobcat Village have left Georgia College & State University residents in the dark.

According to Dr. Paul Jahr, assistant vice president for Student Affairs, a construction worker accidentally cut a power line during the completion of the new clubhouse.

A number of students have been inconvenienced by the outages.

Although the power was out, papers and assignments were still due and students had to find different methods to complete and send in assignments.

“I had an assignment due and I couldn’t get on line,” sophomore Dustin Jones said. “I had to call my professor. She told me to go on front campus to do it. It was an inconvenience to me and it took away my time.”

Jahr said the clubhouse construction should be completed by the end of January.

Power outages are just one of many problems felt by residents at Bobcat Village. Some have reported problems with their television cable and Internet service. Residents should call SERVE with their technological problems.

“SERVE (7378) is the correct place to report problems with Internet and cable service,” said administrative assistant Cindy Bowen. “The SERVE technician will attempt to resolve Internet issues via telephone; cable issues are referred by SERVE to Charter Communications.”

If the problem needs on-site support, SERVE will send a Resident Assistant Technology Specialist (R.A.T.S.) to correct the problem as soon as possible.

“This year we began a new program and added four additional technical positions. These four are assigned to different residence halls and one is assigned to Bobcat Village,” said Bowen.

Late Monday night residents may have noticed there was no cable. The outage lasted into early Tuesday afternoon.

“It was out about midnight last night. It really made me mad because I like to watch t.v. at night,” said sophomore Christie Mumpower.

Students have also experienced problems with hot water, or lack thereof.

“I’ve been taking cold showers,” sophomore Meghan McCabe said. “For the last two days, it will be warm and then I’ll have to turn it all the way to hot for it to be warm for two more minutes, and then it just goes. That is not enough time to take a shower.”

Many residents are tired of complaining, but they want the problems fixed. “It’s just not right,” McCabe said.
