Venture Out heads to Black Rock Mtn.

On Nov. 6 at 8 a.m., Venture Out is heading to Black Rock Mountain State Park in the mountains of north Georgia to tackle 7 miles of steep terrain.

Venture Out is an adventure organization offered through Student Activities. Each semester they offer outdoor trips that include caving, rock climbing and skydiving.

Graduate Assistant of Venture Out Mike Pletsch said the backpacking trip is open to all students regardless of experience.

“The trip is open to all students with an adventurous desire,” Pletsch said. “Venture Out has all of the equipment necessary and no experience is required. In fact, it is a great learning opportunity for students of all experience to learn new skills from their peers because all of the leaders for the trip are students as well. The leaders for Venture Out are all in the Outdoor Education program here at GC&SU,” Pletsch said.

Before students can be leaders for Venture Out they go through a series of three classes that teach the students technical outdoor skills. These courses ensure that the students will be responsible leaders.

“Completion of these courses lets us know that the students now have the skill and competency to provide safe, enjoyable adventures for their peers,” Pletsch said. “As a Outdoor Education myself, I know what the students are being taught and trust them in helping Venture Out provide trips and activities.”

Pletsch said the trail that Venture Out is hiking is challenging but rewarding.

“The hike is challenging,” Pletsch said.? “The terrain is steep and the last time Venture Out did this trail it snowed on us the entire time. It is peaceful, quiet and relaxing.?This particular trail has amazing mountain top views and several gorgeous waterfalls.? It is truly awesome to see the many wonders of nature.”?

Venture Out will be returning back to Milledgeville Nov. 7 between 4 p.m. and 5. Pletsch is confidant students will have an enjoyable trip.

“Venture Out received great, positive feedback from the students who backpacked it last year, so that is why we have chosen to do it again,” Pletsch said.
