SGA to host graduation forum

Editor:

After hearing all of the ridiculous rumors going around about graduation, the SGA decided to call an emergency meeting with Dr Leland in order to clear things up.

What we discovered was that most of the rumors were true. Dr. Leland’s graduation committee decided that because of the bad acoustics in the Centennial center it was not possible to pull off the respectable, intimate graduation that GC&SU deserves.

Their new plan was to have a single ceremony on front campus and to institute a strict ticketing system, allowing each student the ability to invite only five guests for spring graduation and eight guests for fall graduation. In order to represent the students best interests, we could not allow this to happen. New ideas and possibilities were hashed out during the two hour meeting and ultimately, the SGA made a proposal to have two graduation ceremonies on front campus, which would give students 10-12 tickets instead of the proposed five for spring.

Dr. Leland seemed very supportive of this proposal and we feel strongly that this is the route that will be taken. SGA would like to let the students know that we do not support the idea of limiting the amount of family and friends we are allowed to invite to our own graduation.

We do support Dr. Leland’s desire to offer the students a more lavish, personalized ceremony and we appreciate her efforts to give us the quality that we deserve. We realize that some compromises need to be made in order to avoid the chaos and “high school style” ceremony that we have seen in the past at our school’s graduation. That being said, SGA would like to promise the students that we will fight for our earned right to have all of our loved ones watch us walk across the stage and we will not settle for the proposed five ticket theory. There is no need for a new and improved graduation ceremony if you can’t share it with the ones that you love. The SGA will be victorious in this battle, so don’t worry because we’ve got your back.

Still not satisfied? Come to the graduation forum with Dr. Leland and let her know your concerns about the proposed 5 ticket theory. It will be held Thursday, October 28 at 4:30 p.m. in Chapel. Be there and let your voice be heard.
