The Voice

It’s your last year of college and graduation is only a few more exams away. Can’t wait to tell everyone that you have finally finished? Well you can tell everyone, but you won’t necessarily be able to invite everyone you told to your graduation ceremony.

GC&SU is moving its graduation outside and it just doesn’t make sense.

First they’ve decided to limit the number of people graduates can invite to the ceremony: eight in December and five in May. This new policy doesn’t account for large families or small families.

The last rumor has been that the Student Government Association will handle the overflow of unneeded tickets and distribute them to those with larger families. It’s ironic that this responsibility has fallen on the SGA, considering they had nothing to do with the decision. No vote. No voice.

Did anyone ever think about rain, sleet or snow? Mother Nature doesn’t need a ticket and she’ll come whether you like it or not. What are the guests supposed to do? What about the equipment they’re renting for the ceremony? Maybe they could move it to Russell, which provides a fraction of Centennial’s seating. The new Magnolia Ballroom in the Student Center will only hold three hundred-not even enough for the graduates, much less their family members.

You’d think front campus, with its old trees and beautiful buildings, would make for a picturesque backdrop, but it’s not so pretty when your guests are either passing out from heat exhaustion or barely withstanding the bitter cold. Think about the weather in the middle of December or even worse, at the beginning of May.

Imagine telling dear old grandma that she has to sit outside in bitter cold to watch all 30 seconds of you accepting your diploma. But you might not have to worry about breaking the news to grammy, because she might not make the V.I.P. list and end up watching the moment on a blurry jumbo-tron in A&S Auditorium.

The bottom line is that those you love most and have known forever may have to draw straws to be the lucky people who get to sweat in the heat or freeze in the snow.

Graduation outside: DOWNGRADE.
