SGA News
Your Student Government Association has been working hard so far this semester to help all students.
Last week SGA held two different forums.
The first one on Thursday October 7, 2004 was held in the A&S Auditorium with Dr. Leland and SGA President Loman Martin as the speakers. Dr. Leland presented the information that Chancellor Meredith had given regarding a possible mid-year tuition increase. Loman Martin explained the Governor’s viewpoint he gathered from a meeting with him. There was a PowerPoint presentation and then the floor was opened up for any student questions. Some students expressed their need for further financial aid if tuition was increased and Dr. Leland stated that the Financial Aid office is working to help those students and to go visit them.
Later that day, “Rock the Boat” was held in Hoke dining room for any students to come and voice their concerns. Many students came and voiced their concerns to SGA representatives. They advised Student Government to look into the parking situation, textbook prices, lighting around Centennial Center and Foundation Hall, and lighting in the Bobcat Village parking lot, library and computer lab hours and quality of campus media.
These issues are being delegated to specific SGA committees and will be dealt with as quickly as possible. Dr. Jahr and Dr. Harshbarger were present to hear the student concerns and offer some insight. Overall, the forum was successful.
So far in the four sessions the Student Senate has met one student group has been approved for funding and a resolution has been passed. The Men’s Soccer Club bill was passed to help fund lodging for a tournament coming up later this month. The resolution passed on October 7th instituted a non-smoking entrance for every building on the Georgia College & State University campus.
Coming up for this week the Senate will be looking over a resolution that will add sexual orientation to the University’s non-discrimination policy. In the upcoming weeks the Senate will be looking at a resolution concerning textbook prices.
Last year a student came into the SGA office and suggested that we provide a shuttle service to Wal-Mart for the students. We thought that this was an excellent idea and immediately began working out the details and searching for funding. We are proud to announce that a weekend shuttle service to Wal-Mart is now available. We hope that this service will make life a little easier for the students without cars, including a large portion of the International student population. We would like to thank Shuttle Manager Darryl Richardson who is always a voice for the students and collaborated with the SGA to make this service available.
And as always, if you have any comments or questions, please feel free to e-mail us at student.government@gcsu.edu. We are looking forward to the continuation of your ideas and complaints turning into the next big service on campus.
