Bush wins mock election in landslide

Georgia College & State University’s mock election ended in a big victory for George W. Bush Wednesday.

Of the 307 votes tallied, the Bush/Cheney ticket over powered Kerry/ Edwards in a 209 to 80 vote victory.

GC&SU’s Model United Nations moderated the event organized by the GC&SU College Republicans.

J.D. Easly, president of the GC&SU College Republicans, said the event went well, but that it was more about educating voters than the final tallies.

“I think it was very successful. It got students thinking about the upcoming elections, it also allowed them to read the actual wording they’ll see on the ballot and let them find out about the amendments on the ballot,” said Easley. “You can’t have an educated vote if you don’t know about the issues.”

Other races contested in the election were United States Senate, in which Republican Johnny Isakson overtook Democrat Denise Majette 201 to 69.

In the U.S. House of Representatives 3rd district race, Republican Calder Clay’s 174 votes was enough to win over Democrat Jim Marshall’s 107.

Republican Johnny Grant’s 180 votes were enough to beat Democrat Faye Smith in the Georgia State Senate 25th district race.

In the 141st district Georgia State Representative race, Republican Wilbur Baugh defeated Democrat Bobby Parham 172 to 89.

Also contested on the ballot were two constitutional amendments being proposed on Election Day.

The first amendment “to define marriage as the union of man and woman” was supported by 59 percent of students.

Even though the amendment’s wording was copied verbatim from the Baldwin County sample voting ballot, Easley said Model UN moderators reported that a number of questions were asked about the amendment, but to best simulate voting conditions, the questions were not answered.

Finally, the second contested amendment “to provide the Supreme Court jurisdiction to answer questions of law from federal courts” was favored 67 to 33 percent.
