The Voice

Someone once said, “If they only told me all I had to do was study and go to class, I would have finished college years ago.”

When you have an impossible test what do you do? Stay up all night staring at words and numbers? Do you give up and close the book because your pillow is the only thing you are going to understand the night before a big test?

Here’s a better solution… go to the Learning Center in Lanier Hall. Tutors are ready and waiting for confused and frustrated students to flood in.

The center can help students with a variety of subjects on different academic levels, anything from intermediate math to chemistry on the 3000 level. They are skilled in the subjects students have shown to have most difficulty with. Monday through Thursday tutors are available to answer any questions you may have.

Unlike other tutoring services, they won’t charge you per hour or try to teach you stuff you don’t need to know. In fact, they will help you as long as you keep the questions coming.

When you do go to the learning center, don’t be shy about not knowing how to do something. Questions are a sign of intelligence; not asking them is the worst mistake. Obviously you aren’t the only one who has trouble; if you were, the learning center wouldn’t exist.

Along with finding assistance outside the classroom, help is usually offered in the classroom as well. Take advantage of our liberal arts mission-small class sizes and professors who care about your education. Professors give their e-mail addresses during the first class and are required to have office hours during the week. The help is there, but it’s up to you to take it.

There are so many resources available to everyone. There is no reason for anyone to fail. You are given all the equipment needed to succeed in an environment conducive to success.

College isn’t easy, and no one said it would be, but you’ll make it harder for yourself if you don’t take advantage of the tools around you.
