Last spring, the GC&SU SGA proposed this students’ Bill of Rights. After passing at various lower levels, the document was not passed at the University Senate level. Pending changes and approval by the director of legal affairs, the following rights should be passed in the next two weeks.
Student’s Bill of Rights
1. The right to attend classes during regularly scheduled times without penalty if the student cannot attend instructional, lab or examination hours not institutionally scheduled.
2. The right to consult with an assigned and qualified adviser for a reasonable amount of time each term.
3. The right to consult with faculty outside usual classroom time such as regularly scheduled office hours or by appointment.
4. The right to receive realistic evaluations of academic standing and performance in a class prior to the point at which one may withdraw from the course without penalty.
5. The right to have graded work returned in a timely fashion.
6. The right to have reasonable access to adequate campus facilities of which use is required to complete assignments and/or objectives.
7. The right to receive a syllabus for each course every term that outlines course objectives and requirements at the beginning of the respective term, and to be informed by the professor of any changes or modifications made to the syllabus with ample time to adjust to these modifications.
8. The right to have adequate time to complete course requirements.
9. The right of each student to receive access to any of his/her records kept by the institution.
10. The right of each student to have access to his/her graded course materials.
11. The right to be informed of the grade appeals process.
12. The right to be informed of a clear definition of academic dishonesty.
