Is Avril under your skin?

Nineteen-year-old Avril Lavigne has scored once again with her hit CD “Under My Skin.” Listeners who are tired of pop music will be refreshed with this new rock tone. Although she can be considered pop, Avril’s lyrics on her new CD appear darker, more thoughtful and unlike typical pop girl music.

What is the public opinion of Avril Lavigne? Not everyone has heard about this young artist. Laura Sims asked, “Who is this person?” While Amanda Heaton, referring to Lavigne said, “I have no clue what it is.” John Ballard, another student at GC&SU says, “I respect her for her outward disregard to conform to society.” After buying her CD, I agree with John and respect Lavigne.

The most intriguing aspect of this CD is how each song varies in lyrics, instruments and theme. Those expecting to hear “boy-bashing” songs from Lavigne will hear a few. The listeners seeking romantic and inspirational appeal will find them in songs like: “Fall to Pieces” and “Who Knows.”

The spectrum ranges from apathetic lyrics in “Freak Out”- “walk around with my hands up in the air, ’cause I don’t care…” all the way to nostalgic verses in “Slipped Away,” which is a song dedicated to her grandfather who passed away.

On the musical side, the majority of “Under My Skin” has the typical band components of guitar, bass guitar, drums and vocals. Surprisingly though, Lavigne throws in some strings (cello and violin) and the piano. The different instruments change the dynamic of her music and keep the songs exciting.

Another plus for Lavigne on making this CD is that she co-wrote every song with writer Chantal Kreviazuk. Many performers are able to sing and play the guitar, but to also write is impressive.

Avril Lavigne is real. She claims, “I am young and I am free. But I get tired and I get weak …” Take a ride with her and experience her emotions, talents and fears all on her latest CD, “Under My Skin.” Buy it and find out what it means to be under Lavigne’s skin.
