GC&SU to celebrate Georgia Archives Week

Georgia College & State University will celebrate Georgia Archives Week on Oct. 3-9 by “mapping the past to the future.”

Celebrating Georgia’s historical records, publicizing how historical records enrich our lives and honoring those who take care of our community’s historical records are the main goals for the week.

Sponsored by the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board, the Georgia Archives, the Office of the Secretary of the State, the Society of Georgia Archivists, the Georgia Library Association, Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse and the Coca-Company, Georgia Archives Week will be celebrated at 20 cities across the state, including Milledgeville.

This year’s theme, “Mapping Past to Future,” was decided by a committee from the Society of Georgia Archivist and will be celebrated by five events, all free and open to the public.

An opening reception will start the week off in the Museum and Archives of Georgia Education. The Ina Dillard Russell Special Collections will prepare the food for this event, with hors d’oeurves served at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, Oct. 5, a Walking Tour of Downtown Milledgeville will take place between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

“Tour guides will conduct a brief walking tour of Milledgeville commercial district giving historical information about the buildings,” Nicole Mitchell. Assistant Archivist of Ina Dillard Russell Special Collections, said.

There are a limited number of spaces left for this tour. To R.S.V.P., call 478-445-0988.

Georgia Archive Week continues with a workshop on mapmaking for seventh graders, taught by Dr. Doug Oetter, assistant professor of geography.

“The mapping workshop is designed to introduce students to the world of maps and mapping,” Oetter said. “I hope [the kids] get excited about maps and learn more about the history of mapmaking and examine a variety of maps.”

Oetter will demonstrate modern computer-based mapping methods, showing students how new technology can create dynamic digital models of a constantly changing Earth.

Dr. Gerald Atkins, professor of computer science at GC&SU, will lead a lecture called “The History of Computers and the Internet” at 7 p.m. in A&S, room 3-70.

The week will conclude with a Milledgeville Treasure Hunt on GC&SU’s front campus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Participants will travel around Milledgeville to answer questions about Milledgeville history and trivia,” Mitchell explained. “We hope to have a big turnout for the treasure hunt.”

Prizes will be awarded, including gift certificates from local restaurants such as Amici, Buffington’s, Loco’s, Rotelli and Fazoli’s.

Winning photographs from the “Putting it on the Map” photography competition will be on display at the Museum and Archives of Georgia Education Oct. 4-9. Prizes will be awarded.

“I encourage everyone to participate in the events for Georgia Archives Week,” Mitchell said. “We will be giving away a lot of great prizes this year. Come on out and learn a little about Milledgeville and Special Collections.”
