Christians silence other campus groups
Editor:
I feel silenced by the fact that Christians can keep crosses in their dorm windows but when I put up a John Kerry sign it has to be taken down because it can be found “offensive.” That really shows that a group is silenced.
I really think that the Christians get more credit than they think they do. In the Sept. 24 issue of The Colonnade, there was a section titled “Religious organizations offer variety of options.” Last time I checked, when you talk about how religious groups have opportunities and then how they are silenced in one newspaper, that’s hypocritical.
I’m not saying that Christians get everything they need or get all the benefits that no one else gets, but they need to realize that they do have more leeway in events and rules at school. The Christians have all of these organizations like BSU and the Wesley House.
That begs the question: Where are the Muslim or Jewish groups? If Christians are silenced, then why are they the most represented group on campus? Everyday I see signs or chalk about some event that a Christian organization is holding. We live in the Bible belt – there is no silencing of Christian beliefs here.
However, there is silencing of the other faiths. The Bible teaches about tolerance, but there is none. Our government, which should be separated from religion, says that you should be free to practice the religion that you want to. But there is no organization, or there seems to be no organization, for other faiths.
Where is the open-mindedness? Maybe it’s the Christians that are silencing the other groups. Did you ever think of that?
