The Voice

At GC&SU there is a definable gap in communication, even after being provided every new technological method of communicating.

Faculty should find a better way to connect with students. Unfortunately, even though all GC&SU students have access to Bobcat e-mail, not everyone takes advantage of it.

Communication involves two groups exchanging information and ideas. When one of the groups is not open to receiving information, the art of communicating is strained.

Students’ lack of caring does not help the communication gap. If students want to know what’s going on they must use what is provided to them. They would rather believe a friend than check the facts for themselves; confirming what they hear would take additional work.

Why don’t more students check the facts? They don’t know how to ask … they don’t know who to ask.

As a result, many people are mislead and uninformed. For example, when are the new dorms going to be opened? When is the construction going to be completed? Ask a couple students and a different answer will be provided by each. Instead relying on hearsay, students could call the office in charge of all the construction and ask them.

There should be other ways students can become informed about news concerning their major or campus activities.

Many students have an e-mail address other than their Bobcat account. Instead of just sending bulletins and news to the bobcat account, it should be forwarded to the address most frequently used by the student.

Flyers are another effective way to inform students about campus events. Often students walk through the halls looking at bulletin boards or see leaflets distributed on the tables at SODEXO.

Trying to get a simple answer around here is almost impossible sometimes. Being differed from one person to another does not count as an answer. It’s frustrating for anyone not to be answered in the first place, but it’s important to keep trying. If we ever want to reduce the gap in communication, we must continue to ask questions and expect to be answered promptly.
