OIIT plans for Cyber Safety Month
October is Cyber Safety Month, and the Office Information and Instruction Technology plans to hold sessions on how to protect personal computers from viruses, attacks, and other compromising issues.
“We anticipate having one of the top security officers from one of the big universities to talk to students and faculty,” said chief information officer Jim Wolfgang.
Wolfgang said the technology department hopes to begin hosting more information sessions on various computer-related topics in the coming weeks. He also said an organized computer game night is in the works for students who enjoy online gaming.
Wolfgang also commented on pending budget cuts. Four years ago, the technology department had an operating budget of $1.3 million. This year, before the coming budget cuts, the department had a operating budget of $475,000. Wolfgang said he is still waiting to find out the magnitude of the effect of the upcoming cuts on the technology department.
“The administration here pretty much leaves their name tags at the door and work out the problem,” said Wolfgang. “[The faculty] work as a very strong team trying to find the solution for the best of the institution.”
