Irwin Street lot waits for students
Georgia College & State University students and faculty asked for additional parking and Public Safety provided two lots. But on any given day, few cars can be found in those spaces.
The Irwin Street lot can hold approximately 500 cars. It was built primarily for students to aid the overcrowding problem of the existing lots.
“We desperately needed it,” said Ken Vance, director of Public Safety.
The new lot is only a short shuttle ride away from campus, but many students think it is inconvenient to park there.
“I wouldn’t park there because it is too far out and the shuttles aren’t reliable enough,” said sophomore Rena Pruitte.
“It’s too far away from everything,” said freshman Richard Kerr.
Vance said the lot provides another safe place to park. The lot is equipped with plenty of lighting, emergency phones, fencing around the area and is routinely patrolled by Public Safety patrols.
Shuttles stop at the lot continuously throughout the day to transport people who use the lot.
Other than commuter students, few students know about the lot since it has only been open a few months.
“Every time I’ve been there I’ve seen one to four cars,” said freshman Buchi Rapa.
The lot opened in spring semester of 2004 for graduation, but was not ready for general use until this fall. Even though the lot remains mostly vacant, a growing population is soon expected to encourage full use.
An additional parking area located on Clarke Street will be ready for students and faculty in the future.
Students and faculty can find more information about the new lots by reading the information provided by Public Safety. Public Safety traffic rules, pamphlets and parking maps are located in Miller Hall. Also, all shuttle drivers carry public safety information so it is available to everyone.
