New events raises funds, provides fun for students
The first-ever Dance Marathon at Georgia College & State University will raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.
All of the money raised in one area will go to the closest children’s hospital to help local kids. All of the proceeds raised at GC&SU’s marathon will go to The Medical Center of Central Georgia’s Children’s Hospital in Macon, Ga, one of the top 40 children’s hospitals in the country.
“It’s going to be a really great event here at GC&SU, ” said student director Amy Hall. “Campuses all over the United States and some in Canada participate in this event and raise thousands of dollars for the hospitals in their community. We hope to make the marathon a tradition here at GC&SU as well as something that unifies the student body and awakens a giving spirit inside everyone.”
The dance marathon will be held on Feb. 19, 2005, from noon to midnight in the new student center in the Methodist Church across from front campus. Participants will remain on their feet for 12 hours. The purpose of this is for the dancers who raised money to be able to empathize with the children in the hospitals who are battling with illness and have to keep going. Just like the kids can’t give up, neither can the dancers!
“The event is more than just dancing,” said morale captain Sarah Treleven. “There’s going to be bands, games, food and much more to keep everyone entertained!”
Students, faculty, staff and community members will attend the marathon, with children and their families who have been treated at the MCCG. Participants will get a chance to interact with the children and see the impact they have made on them as well as their families. The CMN treats children regardless of illness or ability to pay for treatment.
There is a $25 of the registration fee for each participant. Before the actual event, each dancer must raise a minimum of $100. Donors will send the money to the marathon’s mailbox at GC&SU and a committee will keep track of who raises the most money.
“The success of the Dance Marathon depends on the participation level of the student body so we need everyone to be there for the kids,” said recruitment captain Stephanie Boylston.
The Dance Marathon is a part of Student Activities.
Volunteers are needed to help out during the event or to be a part of a committee. For more information on the marathon, contact Amy Hall at amy_hall@bobcat.gcsu.edu.
