Inaugural Begemann-Gordon Lecture to honor former GC&SU leaders, feature author Tetzlaff

Dr. Monica Tetzlaff will be the speaker for the first Begemann-Gordon Lecture in Women’s Studies.

The event is scheduled for Monday, September 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Arts and Sciences room 2-70. Admission for the event is free and open to the public. A reception in room 2-56 will follow the lecture.

The lecture will be held in honor of the founders of the Women’s Studies program at GC&SU, Dr. Sarah Gordon, professor emeritas of English, and Dr. Rosemary Begemann, professor emeritas of History.

Dr Tetzlaff is an associate professor and chair of the History Department at Indiana University South Bend. She specializes in U.S. women’s history, African American history, and Civil Rights history.

Dr. Tetzlaff will be speaking about “Abbie Holmes Christensen: Writing the Biography of an Atypical Typical Woman.”

“When I found the newly donated papers of Abbie Holmes Christensen at the South Carolina Library in the University of South Carolina, I knew I had discovered a forgotten woman author and activist whose story I wanted to tell,” Tetzlaff said. She plans to address a few of the questions that are often raised when writing a woman’s biography: what is the best way of combining an analysis of an author’s literary work with the story of her life? What is meant by “typical” and “atypical”?

“I hope that my reflections will not only introduce Abbie Christensen to my audience, but will also be helpful to others who study women’s lives,” Tetzlaff said.

“I’m excited to have Dr. Tetzlaff as our first Begemann-Gordon Lecturer because her work is both historical and literary,” said Dr. Susan Cumings, assistant professor of English and coordinator of Women’s Studies at GC&SU.

“She’s a great speaker whose enthusiasm really comes through in her presentation,” Cumings added.

Dr. Cumings noted that both the Women’s Studies Minors and the History Club are involved in the planning and publicity of the event.
