Garrett named Executive of Year by School of Business
Mike Garrett, president and CEO of Georgia Power Company, will be at his alma mater, Georgia College and State University, Wed. Sept. 22nd to receive the J. Whitney Bunting School of Business Executive of the Year award.
“It’s particulalry appropriate to recognize Mr. Garrett as he leads with distinction and with attention to the people in his care as he ensures that Georgia Power contributes to the man communities that it serves,” said Faye Gilbert, dean of the J. Whitney Bunting School of Business.
He will speak in the Arts and Sciences Auditorium at 10 a.m. before being presented one of Georgia College and State University’s most prestigious awards at a noon luncheon in the University Banquet Room of Maxwell Student Union.
The award is given as part of the J. Whitney Bunting School of Business’s Ninth Annual Executives Week, Sept. 20-24.
Garrett’s credentials as a successful businessman prior to becoming president and CEO of Georgia Power include being president and CEO of Mississippi Power, his positions of executive vice president of Alabama Power–where he also served as vice president of finance, senior vice president of external affairs, executive vice president of external affairs, and Birmingham division vice president–and his service as chairman of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee.
He now works on the boards of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, Central Atlanta Progress, and the United States Chamber of Commerce.
Garrett worked in Macon as an engineering assistant for the Southern Company while attending night classes at the Warner Robins campus before graduating in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in management.
Each year during Executives Week, GC&SU features visits from Georgian executives like Garrett in order to educate students on the latest business trends and what to expect in the job market according to their own experiences.
The event is co-sponsored by BB&T, and is free and open to the public.
