September Project spurs discussion of democracy, citizenship and patriotism
The Georgia College & State University Library will join libraries across the country Sept. 3-11 to sponsor the September Project, featuring activities aimed at bringing people together to share ideas about democracy, citizenship, and patriotism. All events are free and open to the public.
The September Project at GC&SU will feature a unique participatory exhibit, a documentary film about September 11 and an open reading.
The exhibit, in the second floor lobby of GC&SU’s library, will allow students, faculty and staff an opportunity to express their thoughts, feelings and reactions to American democracy and citizenship. Blank 4-by-6-inch postcards will be available throughout campus, and participants will have the opportunity to use any art form, including drawing, writing, photography, and collage, to express their thoughts and feelings. The postcards will be mounted on a large display board painted to portray the American Flag. A closing ceremony for the exhibit will be held at 2 p.m., Sept. 11, in the second-floor lobby of the library.
A highlight of the September Project will be the viewing of the film “9/11″ at 7 p.m. on a date soon to be announced. “9/11″ is a documentary originally conceived as a portrait of a 21-year-old firefighter trainee at a Manhattan firehouse, located seven blocks from the World Trade Center. Filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet captured history in the making, including the only image of the first jetliner striking Tower 1, and the only footage from within the tower as it collapsed.
The open reading will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, in the graduate student lounge in the library building. The reading is being held to embrace democratic freedoms, especially freedom of speech, and will feature poetry and flash fiction, or “short-short” stories, on a variety of subjects, including citizenship, patriotism and democracy.
