Paul Loeb to speak for ADP

Outspoken author Paul Rogart Loeb, whose work is dedicated to citizen responsibility and social commitment, is scheduled to speak in the Arts & Sciences auditorium at Georgia College & State University at 6:00 p.m. September, 14.

The event, titled “Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time” after the book of the same name, is sponsored by the American Democracy Project and co-sponsored by student affairs.

Loeb has spent the past 30 years focusing his research and writing on the responsibilities of the citizen and the vitality of becoming involved with social issues.

“My goal in my work is to inspire people to take on the hard questions of our time, which is my definition of true patriotism,” said Loeb. “We may not agree on all of them, but we have to address them as citizens to move forward as a democracy,”said Loeb.

His widely influential books include “Nuclear Culture,” “Hope in Hard Times,” “Generation at the Crossroads: Apathy and Action on the American Campus” and “Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time.”

His new anthology, “The Impossible Will Take a Little While,” discusses the importance of taking action and finding light at the end of political tunnels, much like his previous work.

Loeb is also known for his mighty lectures to responsive crowds at universities throughout the U.S., including Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Yale, Cornell, Duke and Columbia. He has also given lead speeches at well-known conferences, such as the Education Commission of the States, the National Education Association, American Society on Aging, National Youth Leadership Council, the American Association of Colleges & Universities, American College Personnel Association and the Unitarian General Assembly.

Born and raised in California, Loeb later hit the East Coast, where he attended Stanford University, as well as New York’s New School for Social Research. While in college, he vehemently opposed the Vietnam War, and worked diligently to end it.

He edited Liberation magazine from 1974 to 1976. In doing so, he got the opportunity to work with legendary writers, such as Todd Gitlin, Gary Snyder, Grace Paley, John Berger, Jane Jacobs, Noam Chomsky and Allen Ginsberg.

Aside from writing for a broad range of publications, Loeb’s work has also been cited, quoted and thoroughly discussed later by them. These include The New York Times, Washington Post, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Time, Newsweek, and many more.

He has also been interviewed by over 800 TV and radio networks here and abroad.

The American Democracy Project (ADP), a multi-campus initiative sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and The New York Times, is responsible for bringing Loeb to GC&SU. This organization works in getting college students acquainted with civic engagement by providing a forum for conservation, as well as developing courses, strategies and projects dedicated to responsible and active citizenship.

According to the ADP Web site, the organization defines civic engagement as proposed by Thomas Ehrlich in his book, “Civic Responsibility and Higher Education,” which states that, “Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities by developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference.”

Loeb’s speech is free and open to students and the public. Loeb is looking forward to students coming out and learning about how to get involved with their communities and country.

“The more ordinary citizens participate,” Loeb said, “the more we’ll be able to successfully tackle the real challenges that we face.”
