“Laws of Attraction:” A lesson in romance?

According to Audrey Woods, played by Julianne Moore, “Eighty percent of women who say they are too busy to be in a relationship are really just lonely.” If only Daniel Rafferty, played by Pierce Brosnan, knew that. But then, there would be no movie!

Now out on video and DVD, “Laws of Attraction” is a romantic comedy following two divorce lawyers as they find themselves unexpectedly married. The characters of the movie are a little different than the norm. This adds a refreshing twist to the basic romantic comedy.

Audrey Woods is a high-strung divorce lawyer from New York City. She has never lost a high profile case and all other lawyers are intimidated by her in court. That all changes when Daniel Rafferty, a new divorce lawyer to the Manhattan courtroom, goes against her. Daniel is the more romantic of the two, providing a passionate edge to the movie for all the females watching.

Moore and Brosnan both seem a little out of place in this movie. Being such strong actors, the movie does not provide them with the memorable roles normally associated with them.

Although many parts of the movie are not believable, that is the magic of love stories. Business ventures that lead to Ireland and Celtic castles seem to come out of nowhere, leaving the movie watchers a bit confused about how they fit into the movie. The romantic side of Daniel, however, leaves women wishing they could find a man like him. The witty exchanges between the lawyers are funny, but not as hilarious as expected. Even though the dialogue is slow and predictable at times, the movie is a nice break from reality. “Laws of Attraction” is a movie that brings to life the fantasies we all hold of how we would like to be romanced.
