Habitat seeks student volunteers

Habitat for Humanity Milledgeville/ Baldwin County is looking for college students to help with a number of new projects in the GC&SU Community.

According to the Baldwin County affiliate Web site, Habitat for Humanity, founded by Millard Fuller, is a “Christian housing ministry based on the belief that all God’s people deserve at least a simple, decent house in which to live.”

With students’ help, Habitat for Humanity can reduce the poverty level in the GC&SU area by building decent houses for local families who need them. Habitat for Humanity Milledgeville/Baldwin County, or any volunteer organization, only asks students to devote a little bit of time.

There are a number of ways students can get involved with the local Habitat affiliate. For instance, there are a number of opportunities in the following committees: Family Selection, Family Support, Construction, Resource Mobilization, Volunteer and Community Relations and the Campus Chapter.

Also, Habitat for Humanity is now looking for volunteers to work in their newly opened store. Campus Chapter representative Renee Sanders says the new Habitat store is a one-stop dorm shop that donates to a good cause.

“We have cups, dorm furniture, beds and desks,” she said. “It’s like a Goodwill-anything and everything you can imagine, but we look at it as a good way to raise money.”

GC&SU’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity Milledgeville / Baldwin County is also looking for members. The mission of the Campus Chapter is to get college students involved to help raise money in hopes of building an entire house for a family in need by the end of spring semester. Any college student can help with this mission.

Sanders says Habitat is a great way for students to donate their time.

“Volunteering is a great way to get involved with your surrounding community. I think it is great for a student to want to devote some of his time to an organization.”
Sanders has been volunteering for Habitat for Humanity since last spring and she plans to continue devoting her time to the organization.

The first meeting for the Campus Chapter will be Tuesday, September 14 at 4 p.m. in Atkinson room 202. Anyone interested in the Campus Chapter of Habitat Milledgeville/ Baldwin County is encouraged to attend this meeting.
