GC&SU unveils new InfoPage

On Wednesday, Sept. 1, the hard work of numerous professors and students was unveiled to the public: the new Georgia College & State University InfoPage was posted online.

Mitch Clarke, director of University Relations, worked closely with professors and students all summer in preparation for the release of the new website.

Faculty, staff and students seem impressed.

Information Systems and Communications Instructor and Director of the Multimedia Technology Laboratory Caroline Collier was involved in providing faculty feedback on The Info Page..

“The fresh new look is great. It allows for an easy navigation through the site and is attractive and eye-catching. The new search feature is powerful; it allows you to look for a particular topic or article throughout the archives of The Info Page,” Collier said.

The decision was made to redesign the web page at the end of spring semester 2004. The lack of students and faculty available in the summer months contributed to the finishing touches of the project being delayed until August.

Dr. Ken McGill, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics also sent his feedback to Clarke.

“It looks as sharp as can be,” he said. “I like the drop-down menus.”

Clarke said the need for a new page spurred from the surprisingly large audience. The Info Page was originally designed with a focus on faculty and staff members. Students, alumni and members of the community discovered the site and began using it as an informational source.

The recreation process included the viewing of sample designs and gathering feedback from faculty and students. Focus groups, composed mostly of freshmen, were asked to surf other college Web site as well as the new Info Page. Responses from those students allowed further appropriate and necessary adjustments to be implemented.

Dr. Dale Young’s Introduction to Computers in Business students viewed the web page the day after it debuted. Eighty-one percent of these students said that they are now more likely to use the newly improved website on a regular basis.

IDST student John Cannon said, “It seems easier to access what you are looking for.”

Clarke expressed the importance of the continuity of the GC&SU public website and The Info Page. The home page is currently under construction, and is expected to be released sometime in November, 2004.

“When the GC&SU site is finished, the two sites will be much more related. The public website has had the same look for a while and it was time for a change,” Clarke said.

Clarke said he wants to ensure that the site helps promote the intended reputation of GC&SU-that of a personal setting with small classes.
