Zeta Tau Alpha Seeks the Noblest at GC&SU
Georgia College & State University welcomes a new sorority to its growing campus. Zeta Tau Alpha, offering outstanding women at GC&SU the “ultimate Greek experience,” is open to all women, regardless of classification.
Ron Lunk, Assistant Director of Student Activities, said the sororities at GC&SU have been over Panhellenic total (the total number of women that sororities are allowed to have) since 2001.
“There’s been a high demand for incoming freshmen for sorority life,” Lunk said. “The sororities have been over what they’re allowed to have for more than three years now.”
According to Lunk, GC&SU was open for sorority extension since Spring 2003.
“ZTA was the one we found that best fit us,” Lunk said. “They came to us in July and sealed the deal, making it the fourth sorority on campus.”
Being in ZTA gives young women on campus opportunities for scholarship services, leadership activities, social interaction, sisterhood, intramurals and service projects.
“GC&SU is a growing campus and was opening for extension,” said Julia Hill, National President of ZTA. “National Council voted to pursue GC&SU in the Panhellenic Council as an extension opportunity, and we are colonizing at the invitation of the local Panhellenic.”
Being the ninth chapter in Georgia, ZTA is trying to sign up 250, if not more, interested women. After Bid Day, the women will be narrowed down to a chapter of 86.
“We have 142 active collegiate chapters of ZTA,” Hill said. “We also have a membership of over 180,000 women.”
ZTA’s purpose is to “intensity friendship, promote happiness among its members, to perform such deeds, and to mould such opinions as will conduce to the building up of a purer and nobler womanhood in the world” according to the ZTA Web site.
According to Hill, ZTA’s philanthropy is breast cancer education and awareness. The Zeta Foundation has recently announced two new breast cancer awareness events: Courage Nights and “Yoplait and ZTA Think Pink.”
ZTA recruitment begins the week of September 12. Open House will take place on September 14, followed by Philanthropy Day (“Think Pink!”) on September 15. A special invite-only Preference Ceremony will occur on September 16 and Bid Day on September 17.
“We’re excited about becoming an integral part of this fine university tradition,” Hill said. “We look forward to becoming a successful partner with the Panhellenic Council and working towards building an even stronger Greek community at GC&SU.”
