Public Safety programs offer students information and insight
The Georgia College & State University Public Safety Office would like to welcome all new students, returning students, faculty and staff to an exciting new year. The Public Safety Office offers many public safety educational programs to serve the university community. Some of those programs include:
GOTCHA!
This program is designed to increase the level of awareness and security within the residence halls and academic buildings. One method the program employs is by having plain-clothes officers enter the academic buildings to see if anyone notices their presence or calls the Public Safety office.
Adopt-A-Cop
This program is a community oriented policing program for campus law enforcement. An officer is assigned to each of the residence halls. The Adopt-A-Cop officer is responsible for maintaining contact with the resident director and resident assistant and/or community assistants. The goal is to be proactive and have an environment in which students are used to seeing police officers around. Once the staff within the residence halls become more familiar with their Adopt-A-Cop officer, students will be less apprehensive about sharing information with Public Safety Officers and more apprehensible about getting into unacceptable behavior.
Operation ID
Operation ID allows students the opportunity to engrave high value items by either checking out an engraver from Public Safety or by allowing Public Safety to engrave the items at an Operation ID booth. A form is given to all those who check out an engraver or have items engraved. This form allows students to track their items and maintain a proper record of serial numbers, descriptions and other identifiers.
SAVE – The Truth About Rape
(Students Against Violence and Endangerment)
This program is done in two parts. The first part is a 40-45 minute lecture on the facts about victims of rape, rapists and how to prevent a possible attack. The second part is a two hour physical workshop that teaches those interested how to defend themselves without weapons.
Alcohol Awareness
Alcohol Awareness is taught using different methods. One method is the Get Drunk With Your RD program. This program shows students how alcohol of different amounts affects different people. All the subjects in this program are supervised and at least 21 years old. The second method is a program given by the Counseling Services. This program gives students a more comprehensive view of alcohol and its affects.
Drug ID
This program educates students on the many issues of illicit drugs. Drug ID teaches students what to look for while out on the town, and what to look for if they suspect other students are involved with drugs.
Preventative Measures
Preventative Measures is a monthly informational guide that appears in the cafeteria. Each new guide will contain ideas regarding personal safety and home security.
