Leland: GC&SU in the midst of great transformation
The beginning of the fall semester at GC&SU is particularly wonderful.
Suddenly the campus is alive again with students and faculty, ready for new beginnings – new classes, new opportunities for intellectual exploration, new places to live and new friends to meet.
Returning students will be happy to find that the library addition is finally completed. I hope that you will visit soon and often. As a repository of knowledge and received wisdom, the library serves as the academic heart of the university. The new building is visually dramatic and also provides students with lots of extras, including state-of-the-art computing labs and space for leisurely conversation and lattes.
Over the summer, we’ve been busy making improvements to the dining hall in the Maxwell Student Union. You will be able to sample new menu selections in an improved setting that features a spectacular mural created by GC&SU faculty and students.
The theme of the mural is “Campus Life and Community.” It is a compelling work that reflects a sense of pride, a feeling identity and belonging and a depiction of the history and potential of Georgia College & State University.
The mural project was led by professor Valerie Aranda. Barry Horton served as project assistant. The talented students who participated in the project from conception to completion include Angel Anderson, Carolene Bufford. Sonya Delaney. Brandi Dent, Jeremy Evans, Crystal Hall, Tessa Kellam, Peter Lawton, Rachel Lucas, Christopher Nunn, Margaret O’Quinn, Lawson Rackley, Stephen Shaw, Megan Tiedeman, Mary-Elizabeth Watson, Gail Williams and Heather Young.
While the Bobcat Card isn’t completely new, this year it will sport a new look and have some exciting and convenient new features. The card will serve not only as your campus identification card, it also gives you access to facilities and services. And you can use the card as a debit card at the bookstore or at on-campus dining facilities.
Of course, not everything changed at GC&SU over the summer! Construction is still a part of campus life. Some projects are ongoing, including the PawPrints Book Store addition to Maxwell Student Union, residence hall projects, and the renovation of the Methodist Church and Old Governor’s Mansion across the street from front campus. The good news is that each of these projects will be completed during the current academic year.
Another thing that hasn’t changed is the GC&SU commitment to reason, respect and responsibility.
Reason guides us towards truth and promotes sound judgment.
Respect enables us to learn from others and teaches us to cherish our differences.
Responsibility strengthens our character as intentional beings and decision-makers whose actions have consequences.
Welcome back to GC&SU!
