Come Watch the ‘Cats

Everybody loves a winner, so you’re going to love being a Bobcat.

Georgia College & State University wants you to jump on the bandwagon and support the Bobcats athletic teams. Forget about MTV, put down the Playstation II, and don’t even think about bringing your dirty laundry home to your parents every weekend. You have a free ticket and front row seats to every GC&SU athletics event. There are dozens of reasons why you should support the Bobcats, but here are three:

1. The Bobcats win!
2. You can win free stuff!
3. As a GC&SU student you get in free with your student ID!

GC&SU competes at the NCAA Division II level in the Peach Belt Conference, which is recognized as one of the top leagues in the country. Did you know that the Peach Belt crowned 21 national champions and 16 nation runners-up in its 14-year history? GC&SU had four of its teams reach the NCAA tournament last year. The easiest way to find out when the games are played is to visit the GC&SU Web site at www.gcsu.edu/bobcats and select the sport for which you need the schedule.

The GC&SU women’s soccer team is playing in its first season as a varsity sport. The brand new Bobcat Field can be found at the West Campus. Most of the games are played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which gives you something fun to do outside while the weather is still warm. Best of all the admission is free! We have some great promotions lined up, including, a give-away of a free pint of Bruster’s ice cream per month for one year every time the Bobcats score a goal at home!

The GC&SU cross-country teams also compete in the fall and are looking for another great year after re-writing the school record books last season.

We’ll bring you back inside for basketball when the weather starts getting chilly in November. Check out all of the championship banners hanging from the rafters in the Centennial Center, and you’ll see why the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats are always one of the top teams around. The Bobcats have won three conference championships and two conference tournament championships since 1996. They have been to the NCAA Division II Tournament three times, including the Elite Eight in 2000.

The Lady Bobcats won the Peach Belt Tournament last year for the third time, and second time in the last three years. They’ve also won a pair of conference championships and have been to the NCAA Tournament four times. The Lady Bobcats had their best season ever last year, posting a 28-6 record and advancing all the way to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Tournament.

Sit in the end zone sections during games for a chance to win $50 cash or other great prizes during every home game.

The Bobcat cheerleaders are there. They’ve won the National Cheerleading Association’s National Championship three times since 1998. The GC&SU Pep band, which wins the conference competition almost every year, is also there; along with the dance team “The Sassy Cats.”

Games are usually played in the early evening, which allows plenty of time to plan your other evening activities. Did I mention that you could get in free with your student ID?

The spring sports heat up early in February, and they have all established themselves as national powers. The GC&SU tennis teams compete at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. Both teams are ranked nationally every year. In fact, the GC&SU men’s and women’s tennis teams reached the NCAA Tournament last year. It was the tenth straight year that the women’s team had reached the postseason.

Head out to West Complex to watch the GC&SU baseball and softball teams. Over at John Kurtz Field, the baseball Bobcats have been to the NCAA Tournament five times since 1995 and were once again ranked nationally most of last season. They have been to the College World Series and played in the nation championship game. A great place to catch all the action is on the third base hill, so bring a blanket.

The Lady Bobcats softball team also plays at the Peeler Complex. The Lady Bobcats won the NCAA Regional in 2003 and advanced all the way to the national championship game at the NCAA Division II Championships.

The Bobcat golf team has reached the NCAA Tournament for seven straight years and has hosted the NCAA Super Regional. The Bobcats won the Peach Belt Championship in 2000 and had a player selected as the conference golfer of the year four times in the last five years.

So what have we learned here? We win. You could win. You don’t even have to spend a dime! The winning teams are here. The great facilities are here. The prizes and promotions are waiting. All we need is you.
