Season ends for GC&SU softball
Georgia College & State University missed several opportunities to score and saw its season come to an end with a 4-3 eight-inning loss to Lander University on Saturday at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, hosted by USC Spartanburg.
GC&SU (33-18) got the day off to a good start with a 3-1 victory over Augusta State, but the Lady Bobcats couldn’t keep up the momentum later in the day.
GC&SU opened day two of the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Augusta State (13-37) as Jenna Kubesch (19-4) tossed a complete game, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored. The Lady Bobcats scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI infield single from Tara Hassell, a bases loaded walk to Amy Davenport and a sacrifice fly from Nikki Smith. Lee Schneider provided all of the offense for Augusta State, with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Shelli Sirmans took the loss for the Lady Jaguars after allowing three runs in one-plus innings of work.
In the second game, GC&SU stranded 15 base runners against Lander, leaving the bases loaded in the third, four and fifth innings. Lander (30-30) broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Bobcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Davenport singled to right field to drive in Aubrey Koscelski for the first run. Ashley Blanton also scored on the play due to an error. GC&SU had the bases loaded with only one out, but the next two batters struck out to keep the Lady Bobcats down by a run.
GC&SU finally tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Smith scored, following another Lander error. Lander’s Sydney Sneed belted a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead back, and the Lady Bobcats were unable to score in the bottom of the inning to end their season. Smith went 2-for-3 to lead GC&SU at the plate. Tara Hassell (5-6) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits in eight complete innings. Sarah Permenter (19-11) earned the win for Lander, after allowing one run on three hits in four innings of relief.
GC&SU’s non-conference doubleheader with West Georgia, scheduled for Tuesday, has been canceled. Despite a 33-18 overall record, the Lady Bobcats will not make the NCAA Tournament.
