The Spice of Life
What will you think of when you look back on this school year? What will trigger your memory and bring you back to your days of walking across Georgia College & State University’s front lawn, hanging out in the dorms or partying downtown? Often times, popular songs, movies and news events can remind us of our past.
I conducted a survey where I asked GC&SU students about some of pop culture’s biggest moments in 2003-2004. Perhaps you will agree with them on some of the biggest moments of the school year.
2003-2004 was a big year for music. The song of the year, according to GC&SU students, was Outkast’s “Hey Ya!” Runner-ups for this category were Hoobastank’s “The Reason,” Maroon 5′s “This Love,” Usher’s “Yeah!” and Outkast’s/Big Boi’s “I Love the Way You Move.” For country music fans, Kenny Chesney’s “When the Sun Goes Down” and Keith Urban’s “Who Wouldn’t Want to Be Me?” stand out as this year’s best songs.
Music videos that got the most attention this school year were Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” Evanescence’s “My Immortal,” Brad Paisley’s “Little Moments” and Oukast’s “Hey Ya!”
Top television shows for the 2003-2004 school year were “Friends,” “American Idol,” “The O.C.,” “Will & Grace” and “The Apprentice.”
Two films overwhelmingly stole the votes for the top movie of the school year. These movies were “The Passion of The Christ” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
The biggest celebrity names of 2003-2004 were Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Clay Aiken, Mel Gibson and Orlando Bloom. Their faces covered the fronts of magazines, and they brought us new movies, new television shows, hot new music and even a few controversies.
Speaking of controversies, there were many moments in pop culture this school year that caused GC&SU students to raise their eyebrows. Some that came to student’s minds were Britney Spears and Madonna locking lips at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears’ short-lived marriage to her childhood friend, Paris Hilton’s sex tapes and Martha Stewart’s conviction and jail sentence. Janet Jackson’s performance, in which she experienced a “wardrobe malfunction” at the Super Bowl, was another controversy that many GC&SU students will remember for a long time. Michael Jackson’s ongoing issues with child molestation, R. Kelly’s inappropriate relationship with a young girl and Kobe Bryant’s rape trial also stood out to students. Some celebrity relationships also caused a controversy in 2003-2004. Two of these relationships were between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s on again, off again engagement and Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore’s “Mrs. Robinson” affair.
Celebrity couples were big in 2003-2004. Some of GC&SU student’s favorites were Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson and Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore.
Outside of the world of Entertainment Tonight and MTV, there were also a lot of memorable moments in the news. When GC&SU thinks back on this school year, they will remember all of the news coverage on the war in Iraq and their amazement at the capture of Saddam Hussein.
Students agreed that many beneficial changes and adjustments were made at GC&SU this past year. Many students felt that hiring Dr. Leland as GC&SU’s president was the best change at GC&SU. Other students felt the addition of new and improved dorms and the intramural and train depot fitness facilities were important changes made at GC&SU. Still, others look forward to the opening of the new library.
When GC&SU students look back on this school year, many things will come to mind. Although songs, celebrities and news events cross their minds, the biggest impact on their lives were the friendships and relationships they made this year. New experiences, such as being involved in a Greek organization or living in a residence hall made a lasting impression on several students.
So there you have it, the 2003-2004 school year in a nutshell. May you never forget the memories you made and the fun times you had.
