Mrowka wins 400th, as ‘Cats beat KSU

Georgia College & State University erased an early 5-0 deficit in a 13-8 victory over Kennesaw State University, while giving Head Coach Steve Mrowka his 400th career victory Friday night in game one of a three game Peach Belt Conference series at John Kurtz Field.
GC&SU (25-15, 10-9 PBC) picks up its third straight victory, while Kennesaw State (21-19, 9-13 PBC) loses its third straight contest.
Mrowka, now in his eleventh season at the helm, ranks second on the school’s all-time list behind John Kurtz, who earned 577 wins in 18 years.
KSU made it look like Mrowka would have to wait for his 400th win as the Owls jumped on GC&SU starter Brandon Durden for five runs in the first inning. Adrian Colton opened the scoring with a two-run home run, and Scott Conway later added a solo shot to put the Owls up 3-0. Jeremy Brotherton added a two-run single later in the inning for the 5-0 lead.
Durden would finally settle down, and the Bobcats bounced back with seven runs in the seventh inning. Mike Deveaux dented the scoreboard first for GC&SU with a three run home run. Following an RBI single from Jose Leger, the Bobcats took their first lead as a KSU error on a bunt by Justin Mills scored Leger and Matt Nixon. Mills scored the seventh run of the frame on a ground out from John Caruso.
Caruso added a run-scoring single in the fourth, but the Owls would battle back with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning to knot the game at 8-8. GC&SU reclaimed the lead in its next set of swings as Nick Trainor scored from third base on a wild pitch, and Dan Habel followed with a solo home run to put the Bobcats ahead 10-8. The Bobcats picked up three insurance runs in the eighth inning as Deveaux stroked a two-out RBI single, and Greg Serafin added a two-run single later in the inning to cap the scoring.
The Owls loaded the bases with two out in the ninth, but Joel Sayre struck out Scott Hendrix to end the threat. Michael Buck (2-3) earned the win in relief for GC&SU after holding the Owls scoreless for 2.1 innings on two hits. Scott Bradley (2-1) took the loss for KSU after allowing the go-ahead run without recording an out.
Deveaux went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Mills finished 2-for-3 with two-runs-scored to lead GC&SU. Jamie Langham also went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases for the Bobcats. Colton finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Brotherton went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Owls.
The Bobcats and Owls wrap up their three game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m..
