Longer blood drive with more volunteers yields better result

The semester’s second blood drive was twice as long than previous drives, and every nurse in the Oconee region was put to work to reach the increased goal.
“We’re always looking for ways to improve the process for the donors and volunteers,” said student coordinator Paul Sedor. “We wanted to have double the number of nurses here to maintain a swift rate of progress but because we are stationed in a limited capacity area, we can only have one team of nurses at a time.”
The Blood Drive lasted from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m., with over 120 people who donated blood. “This has been the first time that I have been able to donate this semester. I have such a long and busy schedule that, when I saw that it was lasting longer than usual, I jumped at the chance to be able to fit it into my schedule. It really makes me feel good that I’m making a difference in someone’s life,” said donor Emily Tanner.
The biggest sponsor for this drive was Bruster’s. They offered to meet each donator’s pint of blood with a pint of ice cream. Sponsorship is one of the most important aspects of the blood drive, but just as important, if not more, are the volunteers.
“It’s a good way to get involved on campus as well as in the community and I had a great time helping out,” said first time volunteer Stephanie Schatzer.
Next fall, the blood drive will be held in the remodeled church, which will be the new student center. The new location will offer more space for additional nurses and donators. Also, students will be able to sign up to donate blood or volunteer online through the university’s webpage.
