GC&SU teams open tournament play this week
The Georgia College & State University tennis and softball teams opened post-season play Thursday and Friday at their respective Peach Belt Conference Tournaments, which are being hosted by USC Spartanburg.
The GC&SU men and women’s tennis teams opened tournament play Thursday, while the Lady Bobcats softball team begins tournament play on Friday.
The GC&SU women’s tennis team finished second in the Peach Belt Conference with a 16-4 overall record and an 8-2 mark in Peach Belt Conference matches. The Bobcats will get a first round bye and will play the winner of the USC Spartanburg/Francis Marion match on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg. The GC&SU women won last year’s PBC Tournament, after also taking the regular season title. After finishing as the regular season runner-up this season, the Bobcats hope for another good showing for a chance to host the NCAA Regional Tournament for the second straight year. The GC&SU women have reached the NCAA tournament for nine consecutive seasons.
The GC&SU men’s tennis team is having one of its better seasons in the last several years. The Bobcats went 13-5 overall and 3-5 in conference matches. GC&SU will be the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 seed Lander at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the USC Spartanburg Tennis Complex. The GC&SU men also hope for a good showing at the tournament in order to get to the NCAA regional for the first time since 1999. The PBC tennis tournament runs through Saturday.
The GC&SU softball team enters the Peach Belt Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play No. 4 seed Francis Marion at 2 p.m. on Friday in the double-elimination tournament. After finishing as the National Runner-Up last year, a very young GC&SU team consisting of seven freshmen and four sophomores, along with only five upperclassmen, produced a respectable 32-16 overall record and a 12-8 conference mark. The winner of the PBC Softball Tournament earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA regional. The tournament runs through Sunday.
