Fashion File

Although we are moving into spring and summer, somehow the “trend” of wearing socks with sandals still seems noteworthy. This is a phenomenon I never thought of joining. I’m quick to own up to my fashion mistakes, as we all know, but wearing a pair of socks with my sandals never crossed my mind. I hate to discuss feet more than anyone, especially two weeks in a row, but I feel certain that this footwear combination must come to an end.
When it comes right down to it, wearing socks with sandals simply doesn’t make sense. Socks with sandals defeat the purpose of sandals. Sandals are summer shoes meant to be worn during hot weather in an effort to cool your feet. Socks worn with sandals imply that your feet are cold and, in some way, need a blanket. Do you see how these two statements tend to collide into a fashion disaster? Socks, I understand. Sandals, I understand. But the combination of these two is something way beyond my comprehension.
I feel like the people who repeatedly commit this fashion tragedy seem to want to avoid winter shoes. A winter shoe has a closed toe and provides warmth for a cold foot. A sneaker, a boot or some other type of shoe is sufficient. Unfortunately, a sandal does not fit any of these criteria. I don’t understand why you would want to avoid winter shoes, since they undoubtedly require the least amount of commitment (see last week’s article concerning prettying your feet for hot weather, please).
I can’t tell you the thoughts that go through my mind when I see someone wearing Teva’s with white socks pulled up to the middle of their calves. Even worse is when I catch someone wearing Birkenstocks in the same fashion. Maybe it’s because I simply don’t understand the concept. It’s so unbelievably contradictory to everything I’ve ever known, or thought I knew, about that amazing summer shoe: the sandal.
Maybe if I break it down, it will be much easier to understand and thereby prevent such sock and sandal travesties. Throughout winter and fall, or during cold weather, please take the time and the money to invest in the appropriate winter shoe. During the warm weather months, please feel free to showcase your feet free of socks! Sandals, flip flops, and open toed heels are strongly welcomed at this time. To use the sock-sandal duo as a means of decorating your foot in some way is ridiculous. Please help put a stop to this double-act fashion catastrophe!
