Women lose; Men win
The No. 7 ranked Georgia College & State University women’s tennis team had its eight-match winning streak snapped with a 5-2 loss to No. 4 ranked University of West Florida on Sunday at UWF’s White Sands Invitational.
GC&SU (15-4) did not play well in doubles, losing all three matches. The Bobcats won two singles matches, but couldn’t make up enough ground to win the match.
In doubles play, West Florida’s Eva Papastratides and Nicole Plikat defeated GC&SU’s Luiza Biktyakova and Chenelle Kruger 8-4, while Sabine Krawietz and Pilar Cortes edged the Bobcat tandem of Anna Shchupak and Anna Davidsson 8-6 at No. 2. The Argonauts completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, as Diana Olave and Giulianna Oblitas knocked off Rachael Porsz and Jessica McKnight 8-5.
In singles play, GC&SU picked up a win at No. 1 as Biktyakova defeated Krawietz 6-0; 6-3. The Bobcats also won at No. 4 singles as Kruger defeated Olave 6-1; 6-4. West Florida picked up a pair of wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the victory. Cortes defeated Davidsson 6-2; 6-3, and Miranda Dutra defeated McKnight 6-2; 6-2.
After having its last two matches postponed due to rain, the No. 26 ranked GC&SU men’s tennis team returned to action in good form with a 9-0 victory at Newberry College on Monday. GC&SU (12-6) won all three doubles matches, and then swept the six singles matches in straight sets.
