On the record with Dorothy Leland

Melvin Lattaney, Brandon Williams and Odinaka Ezeokoli recently took the opportunity to sit down with Georgia College & State University’s new president, Dr. Dorothy Leland.
The group, better known as the “Mob Squad,” questioned Dr. Leland on a number of topics ranging from her personal information to how she plans to improve GC&SU.
Leland came to GC&SU from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., where she was the vice president.
Now that she’s here, Leland is happy about the move.
“The best thing about [Milledgeville] is the people and that it is within three hours of the ocean, the mountains and a major metropolitan area,” Leland said. “It is just what I was looking for.”
Leland came from a small farming community in California, located 20 minutes from the Pacific Ocean. After 17 years on the West Coast, she attended Purdue University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a doctoral degree.
Leland enjoys being outside and participating in outdoor activities. She has a son who owns a business in San Francisco.
Leland’s plans for GC&SU include: increasing the number of available parking spaces and the amount of residence halls, repairing some of the older buildings, providing entertainment on weekends and improving the variety of businesses downtown. She’s interested in what students want on campus and plans to make this campus better for both students and faculty.
