Cancer survivors invited to celebrate at 2004 Relay For Life
Cancer survivors in Milledgeville and Baldwin County are invited to participate in Relay For Life events next week planned in their honor.
It is not too late for cancer survivors to register for the Survivors Lap at Relay For Life. Survivors are also invited to participate in the “Hands of Hope” dinner Thursday, April 15, at Oak Hill Middle School.
The 11th annual Baldwin County Relay For Life will be held in Milledgeville April 16 and 17 at Walter B. Williams Park.
“We welcome cancer survivors to both of these events,” said Debbie Walker, who is co-chair of survivor events with Kitty Gamble. “This is why we do Relay For Life – for our survivors.”
The survivor lap is the official beginning of the Relay For Life celebration, and this year it begins at 6 p.m., April 16, on the back parking lot at Walter B. Williams Park.
More than 200 survivors “packed the track” during last year’s celebration. Survivors circle the track to the cheers of participants.
Survivors will be treated to a cookout prepared by consumers at The Baldwin Service Center under the auspices of a “Clay Aiken ABLE to SERVE” grant. Survivors will also receive special commemorative t-shirts at the event.
To register for the survivor lap, Walker asked survivors to email her at debcares22357@aol.com, or call Kitty Gamble at 452-7500.
At the “Hands of Hope” dinner Thursday night, survivors will enjoy a dinner sponsored by Amgen, MGI Pharma, and Milledgeville Newspaper Recycling for Charity. They will also enjoy a performance by “Music in Motion,” a sign-language group from the Baldwin Service Center, and will hear a poem written by a student in honor of cancer survivors. Survivors will also be invited to place their handprints on a banner that will be carried during the opening lap of Relay For Life.
The dinner will be held from 6-8 p.m. in the cafeteria of Oak Hill Middle School. To make reservations, call 452-7500.
